Music can have many benefits in life. For young children it provides great stimulus for their developing brain. For adults it can be a companion when out jogging or exercising at the gym. It can also be a stress relief for some, depending on the type of music they enjoy listening to. For seniors, it can actually provide a great deal of comfort and may improve safety for them at home.
Music can inspire physical activity.
As mentioned, many adults listen to music when they’re working out. They find certain types of music motivational. Some people prefer jazz while others enjoy blues. Hip hop could be the preferred workout music of some and it can also be great for older men and women, too. Hard rock and heavy metal may be something adults enjoy to get their ‘blood moving.’
For seniors there may be certain types of music, maybe music from their teenage or young adult years, that they absolutely feel inspired to dance to or for some type of physical activity. Exercise is absolutely crucial at helping them maintain as much muscle and strength and balance as possible. The more exercise they get, the safer they will remain at home.
It can improve emotional outlook.
Music has a powerful ability to help people feel better about their life. A senior who is living alone may feel discouraged because their friends have passed away, moved away, and they feel lonely. The right music at the right time can get them moving, feeling good about themselves, and inspired to do certain activities.
It can offer a moment of nostalgia.
When listening to music from a person’s youth, they often start thinking about friends they hadn’t seen since then. They start thinking about memories they enjoyed, things they never really think about anymore, except when they begin going down this path to Memory Lane.
That bit of nostalgia may not seem like a big deal, but it can perk them up. It can help them pay more attention to their surroundings. It can help them be more inspired to exercise and take better care of themselves because they may want to reach out to some of those people they haven’t seen or talked to in years.
At the end of the day, music is a powerful motivator for millions upon millions of people all across the country. For seniors, if it encourages them to stay active and exercise, it’s going to help them stay safer at home.
