As we head into spring and summer is just around the corner (doesn’t it feel great?) it’s time to think about vacations and travel. When you have an elderly family member who may be dependent upon you for physical support and assistance around the house, you want to bring them along with you. However, you want to enjoy this getaway and don’t want to be completely devoted to taking care of this other individual.
Home care is a great option.
Whether or not you’re relying on home care support services right now or not, it is a great option to consider. Not only would that allow you to get back into your normal routine in life, when you hire through an agency you may be able to have those caregivers travel with you.
Hiring through an agency is the best option.
You can certainly hire an independent caregiver, but he or she will probably have numerous clients and won’t be able to travel with your elderly loved one. When you hire through an agency, they can work things out to allow a particular caregiver to travel with a client, whether it’s for a few days, a weekend getaway, a weeklong trip, or something even longer.
You’ll need to pay their way.
This isn’t going to be a vacation for them so you’re going to be responsible for paying their room and board and their salary while they are providing these services for your elderly loved one. As long as you are willing to do that, your loved one will get the support he or she needs and you will be able to enjoy this trip like you want to.
Consider time off for the caregiver.
You can’t expect this home care aide to work with your elderly loved one 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He or she is going to need time off for themselves. This can certainly be an opportunity for them to enjoy this vacation destination, but you will have to work out a schedule that provides them the opportunity to get some time off and relax on their own.
When this elderly or disabled individual requires significant care and support, it can detract from your ability to relax and enjoy this trip. When you rely on home care support, it can make that trip much more fun not just for you but for the senior who needs support.
