Caregiver Stress on the Main Line in PA
By taking on the role of family caregiver, you’re opening yourself up to a great deal of stress. Not only that, you also expose the senior in your life to some unnecessary risks. Some of those risks can involve trying to do things on their own when they shouldn’t simply because you’re running late or have too many other things to get done before getting to their house.
No one really begins caring for a loved one to try to be the hero; they usually take on this role out of a sense of responsibility. Even though you might think it’s your responsibility to take care of your aging mother, for example, it’s not the case. You can always talk to her about hiring an in-home care provider through an agency to ensure that she gets the proper level of care throughout the day.
Below are three mistakes that are often made by family caregivers that can increase stress for you and your senior loved one:
Reason #1: You don’t admit when you’ve reached your limits.
Everyone has limits. There are only so many hours in the day and no one gets extra time. Even though you may assume you can just sleep fewer hours every night, that’s only going to ratchet up the stress in your life.
You need to acknowledge your limits and stick to them.
Reason #2: You may make mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes, but as a family caregiver, you don’t really have to. Some of those mistakes are likely going to be minor, such as neglecting to change over the laundry yesterday, but others can put the senior or yourself at increased risk.
Reason #3: Your job may suffer.
If you have a full-time job you might be spending too much time on the phone with your aging mother during the day or getting to work late or leaving early. When the pressure in your life builds, you can feel stressed about just trying to get all the work done during the week.
On top of that, if you are getting disciplined by your supervisor, that is certainly going to increase stress levels tremendously.
The best thing anyone can do when their loved one requires some type of support is to talk to them about hiring a home care aide.
