Caregiver Stress in Southwest Houston, TX – Being Organized and Planning Ahead can Help Reduce Stress
Do you need a system for managing your time as a caregiver? Then you’ve come to the right place! This article will give you some helpful suggestions, tips and advice from people who have been in similar situations. Whether you are caring for elderly parents on a full-time or part-time basis, you will find most other caregivers have similar lives. Time management skills can really be effective in helping you to lower your stress levels.
Always Plan for the Unexpected
The most important tip or advice you need to take on board as a caregiver is you should always prepare for the unexpected. Even if you have things under control and routines you strictly follow, one single phone call can throw all of it out of the window. The following are some tips you can tweak and amend to fit your own circumstances:
- If you’re officially employed, hold on to as much vacation time as you can, because you never know when you will need paid leave for medical appointments and emergencies.
- Shop as if you know a natural disaster is imminent. Buy bulk volumes of the things your care receivers need and want, so you have enough in stock to avoid disappointment. A good example of this principle is what Richard discovered. His mom only liked a certain type of lip chap. It was available at two different stores he knew of, but it cost almost 3 x as much at one of the stores. Of course, the expensive store was closest to his mother’s house. Richard’s mother used practically 1 tube per week. His mother would freak out if she ran out and Richard was forced to buy the more expensive one several times. One day he decided to buy about 5 tubes at the cheaper store. Whenever he only had 2 tubes left, he would go to the cheaper store and buy 3 or 4 more. Stress over the lip chap virtually disappeared!
- Keep food at home that is easy to prepare, so that if you have to deal with someone in your care and aren’t at home to make meals for your family, they have other options. Consider having an entire meal in the freezer, just ready to take out and heat up.
- Fill prescriptions as soon as you are able to, so you are not stuck in a meeting or doing something else and can’t get to the pharmacy in time when things run out.
Care for Your Own Needs As Well
You could look at having a good time management system as a way of looking after yourself. By being as efficient as possible in caring for others, you could find yourself with some free time, and much lower levels of senior care stress. This is vitally important because when you don’t find or make time for yourself, you will start to become less efficient in all areas of your life.
