Being a family caregiver is a great responsibility. Whether this is for an adult child who is disabled, a sibling, a parent, or somebody else, you probably stepped up to help them because you felt responsible.
No one has to be a family caregiver.
Because it is such a significant responsibility, it’s important that people understand they don’t need to become a caregiver for a family member. There are other options. Hiring a home care aide or series of caregivers through an agency is one of the best that not only provides an optimal level of care and support, but also allows that individual to remain at home where they most likely prefer to stay.
For those who continue being a family caregiver, it’s important to maintain their own life. If they don’t, the level of stress is going to increase as a caregiver. When caregiver stress increases, it can lead to anxiety, health issues, accidents, and oversights. That’s not going to be beneficial to anyone, senior or otherwise.
Make time for yourself.
As a family caregiver, it is absolutely critical that you make time for yourself. You may honestly believe this is not possible at the moment. After all, this senior relies on you. What are they going to do if you are busy spending time with your friends, going to the gym, or even playing sports like golf or tennis?
You can hire home care support through an agency for just a couple of hours once or twice a week to start. That may give you enough time to devote to yourself, which could also help you relax, clean your own house, and do other things you’ve been putting off.
Pay attention to stress.
Stress can affect people in many different ways. If you’re more forgetful lately, if you’re losing your patience more easily, or if you’re noticing other behavioral changes, headaches, or even getting sick more frequently, then that is most likely a direct result of extreme stress.
Understand your limits.
We don’t like to put limits on ourselves, but as a caregiver it is absolutely essential you set your own limits. How much time can you comfortably devote to this family member? Don’t exceed that. If they need more help than what you can offer, consider home care aides.
Talk to someone.
When you can vent your frustrations and anxieties to a friend, spouse, or even a counselor, that can help you clear out some of the stress that is likely affecting you. This is just one way of many to help you maintain your own life as a family caregiver.
